Atlantis (project)/en

Atlantis is an online forum for (interactive) geofiction. The countries that belong to the project of Atlantis are situated on an alternative earth with a larger landmass. The continent of Atlantis contains three larger landmasses: Borealia, Atlantidia, and Carmentera, the latter of which is still in development. Additionally, there are some smaller island nations.

On the forum of Atlantis a distinction is made in two types of countries: the "Zandbak" (i.e. "sand box") and the countries that have been admitted to the project. The first drafts are made in the Zandbak. The Zandbak is the place where you can experiment with various aspects of your country. When you are satisfied with the themes that you have elaborated, and when you have a sufficient amount of information about your country, you can be admitted to the project. You will get your own subforum with moderating permissions. When you have got your own subform, you have to consider your choices realistically. Big changes in your country won't be allowed anymore in order to make sure that your country's overall character won't change all of a sudden.

History

Atlantis came into existance on another forum, the "Wegenforum", a Dutch discussion platform about traffic infrastructure (signposting and other traffic related themes). The island of Atlantidia containing the countries Hochmark, Brilamontio, Sustulia and Frankenland, together with Tysia became the basis of the project. After the Wegenforum was restructured leaving little room for geofiction, two members decided to create a separate forum, which opened on 1 March 2011. Other people joined - not only from the Wegenforum - and the subcontinent of Borealia came into existance. Many members of the Atlantis forum are still members of the Wegenforum as well. This explains the fact that many countries present a lot of information about infrastructure. Nowadays, other themes are however elaborated too. Cooperation

The structure of the forum allows several forms of cooperation. There is discussion with neighbouring countries about borders and trade agreements. Some countries have diplomatic relations in order to reinforce their friendly coexistance. There are many infrastructural connections between the countries, such as railways, airway and ferry connections, etc. In November 2012 the Atlantic Trade Organisation was founded.

Apart from political and economical relations between the countries sporting events are organised every once in a while. An example is the AFC Atlantis Cup, which was organised for the first time in 2012. For these events measures, stadiums, visas etc. are created.
