Harrawi society is determined by a large part by the existence of clans. At present, there are twelve clans, but in the past, clans have been known to split or merge.

Organisation

Clans are composed of several families, one of which can normally be considered the clan's leading family. Individual persons can also become members of a clan, but that is a difficult process and often involves rivalry with other clans. The head of each family is its oldest member, called Sheik when the oldest member is a man, Sheeiksh when the oldest member is a woman. The head of a clan is called e'Sheik e'Sheikare or e'Sheeiksh e'Sheikare, litt. 'head of heads'.
