Ambassador to Kaupelan named

From The Guelphian, Saturday 23 November 2013

The government has announced the long-awaited appointment of our ambassador to Kaupelan today, with career diplomat Sir William Berry named as the first ambassador to the post. Sir William has served in the Guelphian Diplomatic Corps for 25 years, and is expert on south-east Asia, having served in postings in Singapore, Indonesia, China, and most recently as chargé d'affaires to the Guelphian embassy in Paris.

Foreign relations expert and lecturer at University College Kingsbury, Dr Alexander Macmillan, welcomed the appointment. He noted in an interview to The Guelphian that "Sir William can be seen as a safe pair of hands. He is a consummate diplomat and his appointment shows that the government wants to establish a sound and professional working relationship with the Kaupelanese government and people". Dr Macmillan noted that whilst it might be tempting to name a former politician or grandee from the Democratic Party to such a post, appointed a professional will remove any doubt that Guelphia takes to relationship seriously, and wants the embassy established correctly.

It is expected that the Guelphian embassy will be opened in time for Christmas, with Sir William taking up his post in the new year.

Soccer team return to heroes welcome

From The Sportsman, Thursday 21 November 2013

The Guelphian national soccer has returned to a heroes welcome last night, after their impressive performance at the inaugural FICT Games. The team exceeded all expectations from fans and pundits alike, defeating all before them in the preliminary rounds, only to go down 1:3 in the final to the middle ranked Adzhatia.

Coach Joe Lane told the waiting throng at Kingsbury Airport that his young team stuck to their game plan throughout the series, and reaped the rewards of a disciplined team ethos and improved skill set after the team had performed dismally in the Oceania qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup. Mr Lane also added: "We expect that by playing against other nations, in events such as what we have just experienced in Yutyrama, we can only improve further, giving us a good shot for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers."

The team will be guests of honour at reception hosted by the Lord High Steward on Saturday evening before the players return to their domestic teams for Round 8, which kicks off next Friday with a match at Port Frederick under lights between Port and Beaconsfield.

Guelphian business community responds warmly to Kaupelanese visit

From Financial Journal, Thursday 3 October 2013

The Guelphian business community has responded warmly to the prospect of increased with Kaupelan in the wake of the royal visit last week. The trip aimed to highlight the potential for increased trade links between the two kingdoms, with a number of Guelphian raw products sought by Kaupelan's growing industrial sector.

The chairman of the Guelphian Chamber of Commerce, Alistair Bates, noted that the potential for significant Kaupelanese investment should not be overlooked. "The potential for the Kaupelanese to purchase Guelphian raw goods, such as timber, dairy products, meat, fruits, and vegetables cannot be underestimated", he said, noting also "I also believe that we can increase exports from our manufacturing sector, with our vehicle supply parts and household appliance businesses offering a unique opportunity to grow what has been a struggling sector for many years now." The chairman also had advice for the Guelphian agricultural sector, who look to benefit the most from Kaupelanese investment; "I also believe that Guelphian primary producers should look upon this opportunity to ship not just raw goods, but to also look at look at valuing-adding to their products to increase their attractiveness to potential buyers." Mr Bates said.

This potential boom for the primary sector was not lost on Jeremy Banks, the chairman of the Dairy Producers Association. Mr Banks noted that Guelphian dairy farmers are producers of some of finest cheese and yoghurt products in the region. He also stated that Guelphia must seize its investment and export opportunities as they arise, and embrace the new generation of dairy products, such as permeate free milk, which has burst on to the international dairy scene in the last few years.

Both men called on the government to fast track the opening of an embassy in Purikali before the end of year, to allow for the opening of a business investment bureau office in Kaupelan.
