Within the field of economic geography many models have been developed that are only limitedly successful in describing the real world, but that are very useful in designing a plausible world, country, or place.
These include:
- Christaller's 'central place theory' (about the relative locations of villages, towns, and cities of various sizes): Wikipedia:Central place theory
- gravity models of spatial interaction (trade, migration, transport): Wikipedia:Gravity model
- von Thünen's land use model: Wikipedia:Johann Heinrich von Thünen
